Heiman, J., Heller, S., & Mariani, J.F. (2011). Menu design in America: a visual and culinary history of graphic styles and design 1850-1985. Koln: Taschen, c2011.

What it is: A menu.

The function: To inform a customer what prepared food choices and drinks they may order from the kitchen.

Where I saw it: Menu Design in America: a Visual and Culinary History of Graphic Styles and Design 1850-1985.

The style of the design and typography: Psychedelic

The quality of the work: I wouldn't say this is an example of the best Psychedelic style has to offer, but the menu seems to meet all the basic motifs such as content and themes typically associated with music and social activism. Art Nouveau like curvy lines, organic shapes and hand painting typography. In additon to the bright colors associated with op-art and the recycling and manipulation of images from popular culture.

What attracted me to the piece: The resemblance to the Psychedelic style and the fact that it's a menu says a lot about the restaurant.
