Pixies, 2004, Three-color silk screen, 19 x 25 inches by Jason Munn
Munn, J. The Small Stakes: Music Posters. San Francisco, CA : Chronicle Books, 20

What: Music poster

Function: To advertise a show for an indie rock band named the Pixies.

WhereState Theater in Detroit, MI.

Quality: Jason Munn is world renowned for his music posters. He has done work for Beck, The Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth to name a few. Munn is highly skilled at using the fewest visual communication elements in his compositions.

Style: Munn's style could be described as a mixture of Late Modern, Post-Modern and Contemporary. He's known for using very few elements in his work. In other words, his style can be defined at "less is more."

What attracted me: Munn's use of four eyes balls to represent each band member while skillfully balancing the asymmetrical composition with contrasting color in the negative space to the left and the type set at an angle at the bottom. I find this composition simple yet ingenious.
